How to Play Boggle

Connect letters on the board to spell words. Each letter has to touch the next one either beside it, above it, below it, or diagonally. The longer your word, the more points you earn.

Every day you get a brand new board with a fresh set of words hidden inside. Some words are part of the official list and some are bonus words. Finding either one earns you points.

Each tile shows a small number in the corner. That tells you how many words still start with that letter. When a tile goes gray, all its words have been found.

If you get stuck, tap the lightbulb for a hint. It will show you the beginning of two words you have not found yet. You get up to 8 hints per game so use them wisely.

About 3×3 Boggle

The 3×3 board is Boggle stripped to its smallest useful size. Nine tiles give far fewer paths than a full board, which changes the game completely: instead of hunting for whatever you can spot before giving up, you can realistically work through the grid systematically and clear it.

That makes it the best board to learn on. The tracing controls, the QU tile and the way diagonal connections work are all easier to get a feel for when there are only eight neighbours to consider at any point. It is also the board to pick when you want a puzzle that ends, rather than one you abandon.

Because the centre tile touches all eight others, it tends to appear in most of the long words on a 3×3. If the middle letter is a vowel the board usually opens up; if it is an awkward consonant, expect a short word list.

How to play

Drag or click from one letter to the next to trace a word. Letters must be adjacent, which includes diagonally, and no tile can be used twice in the same word. The line turns green while you are tracing something that counts and grey when it does not, so you know before you release. A QU tile counts as both letters at once.

Words need to be at least three letters on a 3×3 board. With only nine tiles the longest possible word is nine letters, and most boards top out well below that — a six or seven letter find is usually the best on the grid.

Scoring

Scoring rewards length sharply: a 3-letter word is worth 20 points, 4 letters 50, 5 letters 100, 6 and 7 letters 200, 8 and 9 letters 300, and anything 10 letters or longer 500. Two short words are rarely worth as much as one long one, so it pays to keep extending a promising path before you release it.

Tips and strategy

  • 1.Start from the centre. The middle tile connects to every other square, so most of the longer words on a 3×3 run through it.
  • 2.Enumerate the corners properly. Each corner touches only three tiles, so you can exhaust its possibilities in a few seconds and tick it off.
  • 3.Clear the three-letter words early. On a small board they are a real share of the list, and they are quick points while you look for longer paths.
  • 4.Try every path through a vowel pair. With so few tiles, two vowels sitting next to each other usually anchor whatever long words exist.
  • 5.Aim for a full clear. Unlike bigger boards, finishing a 3×3 is genuinely achievable, so treat the progress bar as a target rather than a guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play 3×3 Boggle?+

Drag across touching letters to spell a word, including diagonally. No tile can be reused within a word, and words must be at least three letters long. Release to submit.

How many words are in a 3×3 Boggle board?+

Typically between twenty and sixty words in the main list, plus a longer set of less common bonus words. That is small enough that clearing the whole board in one sitting is a realistic goal.

What is the longest possible word on a 3×3 grid?+

Nine letters, since there are nine tiles and none can repeat within a word — but that is rare. On most boards the best find is six or seven letters.

Is 3×3 easier than the standard 4×4 board?+

Easier to finish, yes, because there is far less to search. It is not necessarily easier to score well on: fewer tiles mean fewer long words, and the scoring heavily favours length.

Is there a new 3×3 board every day?+

Yes. Boards are generated from the date, so there is a new one each day and every past day stays playable. Use the calendar button to browse the archive or type a game ID, which is just the date as YYYYMMDD.

What is the QU tile?+

Real Boggle dice carry a single QU face rather than a bare Q. It works the same here: landing on QU gives you both letters, so QUIT is a three-tile path rather than four.
